Combined listings on Shopify, answered
The questions merchants ask, in the words they ask them. Some are answered by this app, some by a theme setting, and a couple are things Shopify has simply not made available outside Plus. Where that is the case it says so, because a wrong answer costs you an afternoon.
Combined listings on Shopify
What are combined listings on Shopify?
A combined listing makes several separate products look like one product with variants. The shopper sees one gallery and a row of options; behind it each option is still its own product with its own URL, stock and metadata. Shopify has a native version of this, but it is limited to Shopify Plus and to a fixed way of working.
Can I use combined listings without Shopify Plus?
Not the native feature. Shopify restricts native combined listings to Plus. Rubik Combined Listings does the same job as an app, so it runs on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus at the same price, because the plan is priced on how many groups you build rather than on which Shopify plan you are on.
How do I merge two Shopify products into one listing?
You do not merge them, which is the point. Create a group, add both products, give each one an option value such as Navy and Sand, and the storefront links them with swatches. Nothing is deleted, no URL changes and no inventory is moved, so your SEO and your stock records survive the change.
What is the difference between this and Shopify's native combined listings?
Three things. Ours works on every plan rather than Plus only. Ours shows the swatches on collection cards, search results and the home page as well as the product page, where the native feature is product page only. And ours leaves each product as a normal product, so a shopper landing from Google on the green one sees the green one.
Do I have to delete or rebuild my products?
No. Grouping is a layer on top of products you already have. Removing a product from a group, or uninstalling the app, leaves every product exactly as it was.
Swatches on the storefront
How do I add colour swatches to Shopify collection pages?
Turn on product card swatches and pick how they look. The swatches render under each card on collection pages, search results and any home page product list. This is the part merchants most often cannot get from a theme: most themes show variant swatches on a card only when the colours are variants of that one product.
Can a shopper switch colour without leaving the collection page?
They can preview it. Hovering a swatch swaps the card image so the shopper sees that colour in place. Clicking takes them to that product's own page, because each colour really is a separate product.
What kinds of swatches are there?
Three. Image swatches show a picture of the product, in a polaroid style card with the label and price under it. Button swatches are text pills, optionally with a small image inside. Dropdown renders the browser's own select, for options with nothing visual to show.
Can the swatches look different on mobile?
Yes, and they usually should. Settings are held separately for four contexts: product page on desktop, product page on mobile, product card on desktop, product card on mobile. A 60px polaroid that works on a product page is too big for a phone-sized collection card.
Can I show the price on each swatch?
On the product page, yes. Labels and prices are both optional. Product cards default to neither, because a card already carries a price of its own and two prices next to each other read as an error.
Will the swatches match my theme?
They start from a preset and go as far as you want from there. Eleven presets for product pages, eight for product cards, then every dimension, radius, border, gap and selected state is adjustable, with a custom CSS field underneath. The swatches render inside a shadow root, so your theme's CSS cannot reach them and theirs cannot leak into your theme.
Setting it up
How long does it take to set up?
One group takes a couple of minutes: name it, pick the products, name the option. A catalogue takes longer, which is what bulk grouping is for. The setup guide on the dashboard has two steps, and the second one is creating your first group.
Nothing appears on my storefront after installing.
The app embed is almost certainly off. Open Online Store, then Themes, then Customize on your live theme, open App embeds and switch Rubik Combined Listings on, then save. The dashboard shows the embed status, so you can check without opening the theme editor.
Can I group hundreds of products at once?
Yes. Bulk grouping scans the catalogue and proposes groups from one of four signals: a shared title pattern, product tags in a structured format, a metafield the products already share, or a CSV you upload. You review what it found before anything is created.
Do I have to pick every colour by hand?
No. Magic Fill reads each product's image and title and writes the option value and the swatch colour for you, including a second colour when a product is two tone. It also strips a prefix the whole group shares, so Merino Crew Neck Navy becomes Navy.
What happens when I add a new colour later?
Add the product to the existing group and give it an option value. Everything else, including the swatch image and price, is read from the product itself and stays current as you edit it.
What if a product belongs to two groups?
It can. Each group has a display order, and the lower number wins on the product page. This is how a product that is in both a colour family and a material family decides which row of swatches leads.
Themes and page builders
Which Shopify themes are supported?
The app carries selectors for 358 themes: 283 official Shopify themes, 68 third-party themes and 7 page builders. The full list, with each theme's store id, is published on this site and comes from the app's own configuration.
Does it work with Dawn?
Yes, and with the rest of the Shopify-built family that shares Dawn's structure. Those themes are the most common setup on the platform and the most tested here.
Does it work with page builders?
Yes, with all seven of the major ones: Instant, GemPages, PageFly, Omnise (formerly Beae), EComposer, Foxify and Replo. Pages those builders generate carry the swatches the same way a theme template does, which is why the theme type can be chosen by hand in the app.
My theme is not on the list.
Many unlisted themes work anyway, because the app falls back to generic selectors. When they do not, the custom selectors feature lets you point at your card, title, price and image elements yourself, or support will map the theme for you.
I changed my theme. Do I have to start over?
No. The groups live on your products, not in the theme. Enable the app embed on the new theme and check a collection page.
Performance and SEO
Will this slow my storefront down?
Product page swatches are rendered from data already present in the page, so they cost no request at all. Card swatches fetch their data once per page. Nothing a shopper sees waits on our servers, which also means our servers being slow or down cannot hold up your storefront.
Is this good or bad for SEO?
It is the reason many merchants keep products separate in the first place. Each colour keeps its own URL, its own title, its own description and its own images, so each one can rank for its own terms. The grouping is a storefront layer, not a redirect and not a canonical change.
Does it change my product URLs?
No. No URL is created, changed or redirected. A swatch is a link to a product page that already existed.
Does it edit my theme files?
No. It installs as a theme app extension and an app embed. Switching it off leaves the theme exactly as it was.
Plans, data and support
What does it cost?
The free plan covers five product groups with no time limit. Paid plans are 10, 30 and 50 dollars a month for 100, 500 and 5,000 groups, with two months off on annual billing. Every feature is on every plan, including the free one. Plans differ only in how many groups you can build and how many AI credits you get each month.
What is an AI credit?
One product processed by Magic Fill or the visual assistant. The free plan includes 100 a month, which covers roughly 100 products of automatic colour naming. Grouping products by hand costs nothing.
What counts as a product group?
One group is one family, however many products are in it. A group of twelve colours counts as one, not twelve. That is why the free plan's five groups goes further than it sounds.
What happens to my groups if I uninstall?
The swatches stop rendering and your products go back to behaving as separate products, which is what they always were. Nothing is deleted from your catalogue.
Is there real support?
Yes, live chat and email answered by the people who build the app, on every plan including the free one. Reviewers mention this more often than any single feature.
Measuring and automating
Can I see which colours shoppers click?
Yes. The app records swatch clicks and reports them: total clicks split between product pages and product cards, the most clicked products, the groups with the most activity, and how the clicks divide between mobile and desktop shoppers.
Can it tell me what to restock?
It gets close. The sold out demand report counts clicks on swatches for products that were out of stock at the time, ranked by product. That is demand your storefront measured rather than demand you guessed at, and it is a list no other part of Shopify produces.
Can I manage groups with an AI assistant?
Two ways. Shopify's own Sidekick can create and edit groups from inside your admin. Separately, the app runs an MCP server, so any assistant that speaks MCP can list, create and edit groups and settings with a token you issue and can revoke at any time. Both are on every plan, the free one included.
Is there an API for my own code?
Every swatch click fires an event on the page carrying the group and the product, which is what most analytics and personalisation work needs. There is also a small public JavaScript API for re-injecting the component on themes that rebuild their own DOM.
Nothing here matches that. Try a shorter word, or ask us in the app: support is live chat on every plan.
